The time for all the talking is nearing it’s end as the match day for Bernard Hopkins vs Joe Calzaghe to fight gets nearer. The mean comments have flowed, from Joe making fun of Hopkins for complaining of the cold weather in England and calling him Mary Poppins to Bernard saying he would not lose to a southpaw and a white boy. Bernard may have went way too far with that comment, but it’s all trash talk. Bernard is never afraid of controversy and he is the same guy who went to Puerto Rico and in front of lots of crowds threw down the Puerto Rican flag.

Who is going to win this mega-fight? We’ll try to break it down for you, and let’s start with Joe. I have learned that you should never underestimate Calzaghe. He stayed in Wales all these years and never fought in the United States. We figured he could not fight and was just hyped and overrated.
Then American Super Middleweight champion Jeff Lacy went over there to fight him in March 2006 and prove that Joe is really just a hype. Well, Lacy was also overrated, relied on power, and lacked boxing ability. However, I was wrong and really shocked. James Toney also said that Lacy was going to jail for the damage he will be making on Joe. Well, Calzaghe damaged Lacy’s career. He used his jab, left hand, right hand, his reach, uppercut, and any other punch to dominate Jeff over 12 rounds, landing an amazing over 1000 punches. We gave Joe some credit on that match, and in November 2007, he fights undefeated Super Middleweight champion Mikkel Kessler.
Mikkel hits pretty hard, looks stronger, and he could beat Joe. It turned out to be wrong. Joe dominated Kessler over the 12 rounds as he got into a groove of throwing quick punches.
Now Calzaghe is an undefeated 36 year old southpaw and is also in good shape. He is moving up to 175 pounds as he seeks his next victims.
Now let’s take a look at Bernard Hopkins. He is a no holds bar type of guy, and he will use any type of tactic to win whether it is inside or outside the ring. This attitude of his might have a lot to do with the lifestyle he has including the time he spent in prison, and he is mentally strong. He lives a disciplined life, no smoke, no alcohol, no drugs, and is always in shape. He is self motivated and focused on the last at hand, and at 43, he is a freak of nature because he still is at the top of his game.
So who will win the fight this Saturday? Joe is a strong, slick, and fast southpaw who throws a lot of punches. He is in great shape and is willing to counterpunch or come forward from time to time.
With the amount of punches he throws, he usually keeps his opponent on the defensive all night long. The quickness Calzaghe has helps him get into position defensively without paying any price. He does not get hit cleanly very often and for the most part his offense is his defense. Bernard Hopkins is slick and has deceptive power.
Hopkins has a deceptive power, slick, and is undefeated against southpaws. He is more of a good inside fighter, and from time to time, he will hold and hit. He also throws low blows on the opposite side of where the referee is standing, so by any means necessary he will win. Hopkins is not as quick as he used to be. However he has ring intelligence. We see Hopkins doing some tactics like maybe hit him on the break, and holding Joe to frustrate him. Bernard will use tactics that really bothers fighters. Joe will throw his large volume of punches, and bernard will use his own jab as well, then follow it with an overhand right or his straight right hand.
As Calzaghe throws his great number of punches, we see Bernard counter punching Joe in the opening he leaves from throwing those many punches. We will give this a decision win for Hopkins.
