Not by their fancy (And, in some cases overwhelmingly) the use of adjectives or 'buzz' words. Not with the number of "creative" prices they have on their trophy cabinets.
Not even by a little annoying overuse of exclamation points! Or their obsession with. . . ellipsis points. No. Great writers are those who immerse in their client's product / service and come out with a piece of copy that through effective publicity of the product / service 's services and an assessment of human psychology and emotions compels readers to take action.
These writers deliver what the customer wants. Results.
With this in mind, we have taken a look back in the year to bring you a countdown of the top 5 British born writers. Those who delivered exceptional results for their customers, again and again.
5. Andy Maslen Now most of you have not heard of Andy Maslen before, and when placed alongside the four other giants on our list, he may seem quite unworthy this position. But hear us out. Andy is one of the most straight-talking, no-nonsense writers we've ever met. He is interested in provoking action by the reader, and only that. With particular emphasis on psychology and human nature in his copy, Andy has created outstanding results for high-profile clients such as The Economist and PricewaterhouseCoopers.
4. David Abbott brain behind the hugely successful campaigns for Sainsbury's, Chivas Regal and Volvo (which he actually appeared in the advertisement itself standing under an uncertain suspended Volvo). David, now retired, joined a club for art and copy the "hall of fame" in 2001. A true copywriting legend who had a passion for results.
3. Drayton Bird, a legend in many respects, not only in the copywriting field, Drayton been involved in direct marketing and advertising for over 40 years, supplying some of the most compelling campaigns in the world. An author of several books on the subject of direct marketing and owner of "Drayton Bird Associates, Drayton is a veteran of the copywriting business, and was once credited by Ogilvy, who know 'more about direct marketing than anyone in the world. "
2. Claude C. Hopkins Okay, he is not British but a list of legendary copywriters would simply not be complete without the presence of Claude Hopkins. Usually credited as being one of the highest paid copywriters ever (earning today's equivalent to $ 2 million a year while working for the Albert Lasker) and inventor of 'copy research', was Claude a monster hard worker who constantly seeks to test new ideas in search of better results.
1. David Ogilvy Yes, the number one spot was reserved for none other than the 'father of advertising. "Nearly ten years after his death, he still holds title (at least in our books) as the greatest British born writer to have graced the advertising industry.
Ogilvy was behind numerous campaigns for Schweppes, Campbell's condensed soup Dove soap, Guinness, and (one of his most famous – and successful – campaigns of all time) Rolls Royce. Through the years he has created millions of pounds to its customers and the company that he founded in 1949, continues Ogilvy and Mather to do it. Long can he hold this position.
